Today’s Learning Targets (Can You Master Them?)

• Understand:  A song has a melody--a series of single notes.  Most songs also have words (lyrics) to go with the notes.  Songs are recorded in a particular key and at a particular tempo using specific chords and instrumentation.

• Know:  These terms:  melody, chord, lyrics, instrumentation, arrangement, tempo, chromatic scale, key.

• Do:  Consider the famous case Bright Music vs. Harrisongs, where ex-Beatle George Harrison was found to have unintentionally copied the song "He's So Fine" while composing his hit, "My Sweet Lord".  Since there are only 12 different notes in the scale, and since the sound of a song is greatly influenced by its lyrics, harmony, and instrumentation, shouldn't infringement cases like this one be judged more as a question of 'fair use'?  In other words, shouldn't judges consider the character of the new work, whether the notes are re-used in a transformative way, whether the new recording harms the commercial value of the old, and so on?

• Understand:  Many cellphones, tablet computers and desktop PCs (such as our iMacs) now have built-in cameras and microphones, allowing you to take still pictures or short movies.

• Know:  These terms:  application, Finder, PhotoBooth, iPhoto, Preview, exposure, contract, highlights, shadows, saturation, temperature, tint, sepia, sharpness.

• Do:  Take at least one still picture of yourself--either alone or with classmates--and add it to your period's Selfies Page.

• Understand:  Providing personal information to someone you meet online, or keying it into a website form, makes you a target for advertisers, identity thieves, and even predators.

• Know:  These terms:  cybercrime, social networking, privacy, phishing, impersonator, identity theft, data mining, spoofing, fraud, bullying,

• Do:  Create and publish a web-safe profile for social networking that introduces you and expresses your personality in a positive and interesting way.
