• Understand:  Computer viruses are malicious software designed to steal your data, put others in control of your computer, and/or damage your equipment. 

• Know:  There are viruses for smartphones and tablets as well as desktop PCs.

• Know:  Meaning of terms malware, hacker, virus, antivirus, Trojan, worm, backdoor, hacker, exploit, zombie, Interpol, FBI, back-up, sensitive data, package encyption software.

• Do:  Tell some of the history of computer viruses.  Describe law enforcement efforts to catch and punish criminal hackers.

• Do:  Explain how a virus-checker program protects your computer from poor performance and data loss.

• Do:  Explain why users must be wary of "free" software, especially free virus-checkers.

• Do:  Tell why keeping backups of your data is important.

• Do:  Name an open-source encryption program compatible with the commonly-used operating systems.

      

• Understand:   Browser-based webpage editors like those on pbworks, wikispaces, or Google Sites, make it easy to create and maintain a web page. 

• Know:  Meaning of terms: permissions, home page, profile, sandbox, concurrency, page locking, public domain, DMCA takedown request.

• Do:  Create a clean-and-legal web page that has your first name and some public domain clipart on it.

• Do:  Add a half-dozen working hyperlinks to a page, enabling click-to-view wikipedia, microsoft.com, onelook.com, etc.

• Do:  Create two pages in your web folder, Page A and Page B, and hyperlink them to each other..

 

• Understand:  Touch typing can get you a better job and gives you a way to make money in school.

• Know:  The District goal for students' touch typing speed is 25 wpm with at least 90% accuracy.

Do:  Key the Bancroft Middle School typing tests at 25 wpm or better.

             Write your messages in English.  You will, however,

             be sending them in a foreign language.

             Your friends will reply in a foreign language that you don't

             know, so you will have to translate what they said.

             You will send at least two messages, and reply to at least two.
